Success Story: Malaysia’s Emission Monitoring Compliance

Malaysia’s commitment to becoming a nation with net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 would require RM350 billion to RM400 billion in cumulative investments, mainly in the energy sector, representing 0.8 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP) every year until 2050.

This project aimed to meet the requirements of the Clean Air Regulation 2014, specifically focusing on Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS) for a Natural Gas Fired Combined Cycle Power Plant with a capacity of 650 MWe towards net-zero emission.

We faced several challenges beginning of the tender process. The end user, with previous experience dealing with CEMS, proved that they only want the best solution with the lowest compliance cost and best after-sales support. Despite these requirements, our team was determined to deliver a successful solution.

To address the challenges, our team designed and proposed the SIEMENS Ultramat 23 Analyser, Buhler Technologies sample handling system, and sample gas heated line. This combination ensured accurate, reliable measurement of CO, NOx, and O2 levels in real-time.

Several factors can be attributed to the success of this tender. The Ultramat 23 Analyser, with its impressive six-month maintenance interval, reduced downtime and maintenance costs. Daily zero calibration using ambient air ensured accurate and reliable measurements. This statement is not only on technical paper where we have a strong and positive reference from our previous Continuous Emissions Monitoring System in operation at other Power Plant which further instilled confidence in our solutions and capabilities.

Continuous support from the factory and our technical team played a crucial role in the success of the project. Our expertise and commitment ensured seamless installation, commissioning, and ongoing operation of the CEMS system. We committed to provide 24-hour on-site support ensuring the smooth operation of the CEMS system.

Overall, despite the initial challenges, the implementation of the Natural Gas Fired Combined Cycle Power Plant with the CEM system was a resounding success. Our project team’s dedication, the reliability of the chosen equipment, and the support received contributed to achieving regulatory compliance and ensuring a cleaner and more sustainable power generation process towards net-zero emission.
